Augustine Literacy Project Upstate Update Winter 2013

Changes in our Boardwork

This year has brought some changes to the Augustine board. The Augustine bylaws state that the officers may only serve for two consecutive three-year terms so it was time for Maxine Bennett to step away from her chairman position. Maxine remains Director. Enthusiastic Mary Lou Earley is now the chairman, and the ever capable and always busy Pat Riordan was nominated and elected to vice-chair before she could argue. Gratefully, Ann Copeland continues as secretary and Terri Koontz as treasurer. We were sorry to say good bye to Pat Porter as she steps back to enjoy the delights of grandmothering.

Our Mission

We train and support volunteer tutors working to improve the reading, writing and spelling abilities of low-income children and teens who struggle with literacy skills.

Can't Be a Tutor
But Want to Help?

Could you volunteer to help with office tasks or fundraisers?

Are you a member of a group that could host a presentation of Augustine?

Could you afford to sponsor a tutor for part or all of their training?

Do you know or are you part of an organization that funds nonprofit organizations?

Maybe you could make a tax deductible donation?

The Augustine Project is supported primarily by individual donors. Other funding sources include grants, special events, and church outreach funds. We welcome gifts of any size.

YOUR CAROLINA — WSPA 7
On Tuesday, Feb 5, channel 7 at 10 a.m. Maxine was featured on the Your Carolina show with Jack Roper and Kimberly Kelly.
It was a great opportunity to create buzz about all that Augustine tutors do for education in the Upstate.

Good News!

Right now in the Upstate, we have 16 tutors serving 1:1 with 20 children!

At the December Brunch Bunch, we had nine tutors receive their certificates of completion. This means that they completed the summer course, were observed, and finished 60 lessons or one full school year of tutoring! We are so proud of their determination and willingness to give of themselves to meet the need. We are especially grateful that most of them continue to tutor beyond their basic commitment!

Even with all that good news… we still have unfulfilled requests for help. Maybe you could be the next Augustine tutor who changes a life! Contact Maxine today to sign up for summer training!
