What We Do
We provide 2-3 free, 45-minute, one-on-one lessons weekly to qualifying students at their school during the day. The lessons are individualized, structured and multi-sensory. This instruction allows our students to process reading in an alternative way, through more than simply looking at words on a page. In every lesson the student learns to:
- see (it)
- hear (it)
- touch (it)
- say (it)
- read (it)
Five Essential Components of Reading Instruction
Every Augustine lesson includes the five essential components of research-based reading instruction as defined by the National Reading Panel:
- phonemic awareness
Through a series of researched-based assessment criteria, the student's literacy skills are evaluated at the beginning of the year so that the Augustine tutor knows best where to start. Specific phoneme sequencing is then followed with a strict lesson plan. This helps untangle some of the student's language confusion and allows the child to proceed at their own pace.
Typically, at the end of the year, most of these students are reading at grade-level.
